The lottery in Kansas, like other state lotteries, is designed to produce revenue for the state. Profits are distributed to state initiatives, including economic development, prison construction and maintenance, local juvenile detention facilities, and more.

In 1986, voters approved amendments that would allow state lotteries to be created. This led to the creation of the Kansas Lottery in 1987, and billions of dollars in revenue have gone toward a variety of state programs.

There are a number of different lottery games available in Kansas, including Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto America, Pick 3, 2by2, Lucky for Life, and Super Kansas Cash. The odds of winning vary by game.

Prizes range from $1 to $20 and are easily accessible at a large number of retailers across the state. The most popular games include Powerball, Mega Millions and Lucky for Life, as well as the annual Holiday Millionaire Raffle.

The jackpots on these games can be huge, but there are also other attractive prizes. Some scratch-offs pay out multiple winning combinations, while others have large jackpots that are proportional to the cost of the ticket.

Other lottery games in Kansas include Keno and Racetrax. Both are similar to California’s Daily Derby, with players selecting numbers from a pool and winning prizes based on how many of those picks match the winning digits.

If you’ve won a lottery prize in Kansas, you can claim it either at a local retailer or the KS Lottery headquarters. For prizes over $600, you must claim them in person or by mail. Taxes are withheld on winnings that exceed $5,000, but only if you present a tax ID or Social Security card. For non-residents, tax withholdings depend on the amount won and are generally higher than those for U.S. citizens or residents.
